George Walton Glasgow Style Arts and Crafts oak 'Abingwood' chair

£2,500.00

Description: Stunning Glasgow Style Arts and Crafts oak ‘Abingwood’ chair. Wonderful sculptural detailing.

George Walton designed the ‘Abingwood’ chair for the Rowntree’s Cafe, Scarborough and The Willow Tea Rooms, Buchanan Street, Glasgow.

Designer: George Walton

Manufacturer: William Birch Ltd - see photo from William Birch Ltd sketchbook, High Wycombe Museum. This is apparently on page 603. This chair has a paper label to the underside saying 603, so perhaps this is the design / model number, not the page number.

Date: c.1900

Dimensions: Width 68cm; Depth 56cm; Height 82cm

Condition: Excellent condition. The solid oak frame is a lovely rich colour. Structurally strong. The leather has been replaced at some point, but the detailing and stud work are true to the William Birch archived sketchbook.

An excellent example of one of the great Glasgow Style / Arts and Crafts chairs.
